OWRFC|Match Report

Match Report by Phil Scott.
Date: 4th October2008 Opposition: Kings College Venue: OWRFC

Old Williamsonians 17 Kings College 7

Superstition often plays a big part in rugby, be it omitting the number 13 from the line-up, having pre match rituals or even that special pair of pants you always wear on match days but superstition had no place at the fortress as the Old boys marched out donning a new kit to take on Kings College.

The game started with both teams jostling for position as they struggled to settle down. With the home side pinned in their own half there was little opportunity to attack but defence stood strong and for all the visitors’ possession they never really looked like crossing the try line. It took a moment of brilliance to break the deadlock, skipper tom Lord rose in the lineout so high he came down with ice on him to deliver good ball to the real James brown at scrum half from that moment it was handed to the backs to take control, a gliding Dan ‘fanny’ Harrison stepped off his wing to take a lovely line off Darren ‘Garfield’ Finn, then to the amazement of all released a pass to Adam Bambridge who crossed the line. Harrison had surely been reading coaching manuals the night previous.

It didn’t take long for the old boys to double the lead as Jamie ‘Timu’ Collins, on return from old age problems, powered over and ran in under the posts. Welch converted the addidtionals and the home side were looking comfortable but not convincing at half time. It would not have been uncommon for the home side to then run away with the game in the second half; however this was not the case. Kings College came back at the OWs and tested their resilience eventually forcing a pass which was intercepted for the visitors to score under the posts. This is the first score that the old boys have conceded in this campaign and the manner in which it was scored was a bitter pill to swallow. Any danger that the game was still in the balance was soon dismissed when Ross ‘savage’ Savin burst down the wing to put the game out of sight.

Injuries to key hookers meant that the performance lacked balance but in situations like this it is important to win ‘ugly’ and regardless the old boys are now 3 wins from 3 league games. Some superb performances were on display during the win, with special mentions going to the back row, Westy, Dale and Dawson who gelled well and worked hard around the park. Tom ‘el Capitain’ Lord was inspirational leading from the front and Darren ‘Garfield’ Finn controlled the game well in the backs but the Swain and Son Man of the match goes to Matt Clemens-Larry who scrumaged extremely well but was also effective in the loose.
