OWRFC|Match Report
| Date: 13th September 2008 | Opposition: Foots Cray | Venue: OWRFC |
A new Season, a new league but a continued run of form as the old boys kicked off a successful start to the new campaign. A 53-0 romping victory at the fortress sent a well intentioned message to the Kent 2 league, “the old boys are here to compete”
A well directed kick off from fly half Darren ‘Garfield’ Finn immediately put the visitors on the back foot; from that moment on it was one way traffic. Jimmy ‘tower 1’ Highfield powered over from 15 yards out to open the scoring. It didn’t take much longer for the old boys to set up camp inside the oppositions 22 and after some resilient defence Ross ‘Savage’ Savin pirouetted over the line for a try that could earn him a spot in the latest production of Swan Lake. Welch converted for the additional points. With the lead more than doubled confidence began to run through the home team. And a display of champagne rugby from the restart saw debutant Adam Bambridge show some express pace to glide over for another score. As the opposition heads began to drop the Old boys were relentless with Tom ‘el capitain’ Lord running in under the posts after some superb link up play with Welch and Scott. A further display of pace and strength from the newly streamlined Mark ‘squelch’ Welch saw him head over for two well finished scores before the half time break.
As the second half began it was clear that Foots Cray were not about to roll over, some effective work around the fringes combined with poor discipline form the home side soon had the old boys on the back foot, but resilient defence coupled with the boot of Darren Finn showed that the home side were as effective in defence as in offense. A break from full-back Welch saw James ‘JJ’ Brown head over for five points with an assist from Scott. Further scores were added from the inspirational skipper Lord and Welch to complete a superb hat-trick.
A good start to what will be a long and arduous campaign. The score reflected a domination in possession; however nothing should be taken away from Foots Cray who competed until the final whistle. There is still a lot that the old boys need to work on if they are to be the recognised force in Kent 2, which so many believe they should be.
Special mention goes to debutants Matthew Clemens –Larry and Adam Bambridge who shone in key positions. Thomas Lord provided much needed leadership and Ross Savin dominated contact in both attack and defence. A mention must also be given to Jamie ‘Timu’ Collins who rolled back the years once again in the midfield. However the Swain & Son man of the match goes to Chris ‘Dawson’ Norris whose commitment to the cause could never be questioned helping to provide a strong platform for others to achieve glory.
