Match Report by Phil Scott.
Date: 20th September 2008 Opposition: Brockleians Venue: Brockleians

Brockleians 9 Old Williamsonians 32

A trip to the outskirts of the capital saw the old boys bag their first away victory of the season against a tough brockleians side to continue their bright start to the campaign. The home side enjoyed good periods of possession but failed to break down a resilient OWs defence, much homage must be paid to the back three who stood up well against a barrage of up and unders, a tactic taken straight from the Argentinean coaching manual. Poor discipline allowed the hosts to get on the score sheet first with a well struck penalty, but this saw only to kick start the old boys into life, some good phases of play and strong running saw Dan ‘Fanny’ Harrison cut a line that Amy Winehouse would have been proud of, to run in under the posts. Welch converted then added a penalty to take the visitors into the break with a well deserved 10-3 lead.

The Old boys started the second half like a completely different team, Adam Bambridge showing some electrifying pace and fleeting footwork to wrong foot the brockleian defence to run in under the posts, Welch slotted the additional points and the home side began to fade.

The hosts never really looked like troubling the visitors try line, however once again the old boy’s temperament got the better of them conceding several penalties in key positions. Any fears that the lead was going to be let slip were soon dispelled as the real James ‘JJ’ Brown scored two snipping tries from typical scrum half positions. Welch converted one and launched a penalty from distance.

The old boys ran out deserved winners and the strong travelling support was treated to a well contested match. Special mentions must go to the front 5, in particular Tom ‘old Fielding would...’ Fielding who scrummaged immensely against a strong pack. Adam Bambridge impressed once again and Dan ‘Cyril’ Terrell dealt well with the high ball. Jamie ‘Timu’ Collins showed that every player eventually reaches the age where two consecutive games is simply too much. But the Swain & Son man of the match goes to JJ Brown whose scores put Williamsonians out of sight.

Although the victory was comfortable it was a far cry from perfection, handling errors were a far too frequent occurrence and once again poor discipline allowed the opposition to stay in touch. This aside, the Old boys are still sitting pretty at the top of Kent 2.
